L’estate della mia rivoluzione

Angelica Grivèl Serra

Luce is seventeen and lives with her beloved mother Valeria in a large house by the sea in Cagliari, pampered by the unconditional love of a family that is almost all female. Kissed by beauty and an extraordinary intelligence, she succeeds at school without too much effort but does not have great relationships with her peers. To tell the truth, she does not resemble the teenagers around her at all. Because Luce, at her age and especially in the body of a girl her age, does not feel at all at ease. It is as if she belongs to a different declination of the same species, as if she were out of sync. Unlike her classmates, in fact, she is unable to accept the harshness of metamorphosis, to enjoy its strength and to grasp all its power. On the contrary, the image that is given back to her every day by the mirror, that body that changes and that surprises her every day with new and unwanted details, does not represent her. Not anymore. It is alien to her, unknown, an enemy. An image far from how she really feels, deep down. But the summer she is about to experience, with the encounters that will punctuate this lazy and persuasive season, could surprise her, offering her the chance to face the atrocious sense of suspension and uncertainty that grips her, and to take those first indispensable, awkward yet revolutionary steps that, by making peace with the past, could allow her to embrace a future full of promise.
