“When poverty enters the door, love escapes through the window” is written in a shack in Nairobi. After the theater experience with street kids that led to the extraordinary adventure of Black Pinocchio, Marco Baliani returns to Africa for a new challenge. A group of boys and girls try, once again through theater, to explore without veils and without reticence the loving universe of the slums, to decode the signals of the obsessive presence of AIDS, of the fear of contagion, of the poor use of condoms. Africa is dying because the virus finds no obstacles where life is pure survival. Where there is no time to love each other well.
Good love is born from a path that has been outlined improvisation after improvisation, rehearsal after rehearsal, in a continuous exchange between Baliani and the young neo-actors. The author tells us about this incredible challenge, the story of a possible redemption, makes us listen to the voices of the boys and girls, their hip hop songs, their stories. The writing stages, in parallel with the construction of the show, the violence of language and male behavior, the hypocrisy of religions, the criminal behavior of pharmaceutical companies, anger, frustrations, ignorance, the hell of landfills inhabited by millions of individuals, the loneliness of illness. But the journey is also a joyful journey, in stages, inside a non-tourist Africa, beautiful and terrible, in search of other “good loves”, inside other hells: in the north of Uganda among child soldiers, in the south of Sudan where peace has broken out, right into the Rift Valley, among the great animals of African myth.”
