On the Altipiano, men fought who often died in vain, at the whim of an incompetent, “crazy” or cognac-drunk commander, paying with their lives the price of irresponsible political and military choices; but also men who gave their lives with courage in the belief that superior values and ideals exist.
Soldiers who did not give in to despair and who, in the end, many years later, were able to say that “…in war we even sang sometimes.”
