Playwright and director, one of the most significant “company poets” in Italian theatre, he is the founder of the Teatro delle Albe (1983) together with Ermanna Montanari, with whom he shares the artistic direction. His plays are published and performed in Italy and in ten other languages around the world. Martinelli has received numerous awards, in Italy and abroad, including seven Ubu prizes and the theatre critics’ prize in France for Aristophane dans les banlieues, published by Actes Sud in 2020.
