We decided to do this show to talk about today. And to talk about today we thought of telling a story from many years ago, when I was 17.
\nIt is the story of a small personal odyssey made of encounters, discoveries, defeats and travels, from Bologna to France and from France to the Mediterranean, to Spain, to Algeria.
\nIt is the coming-of-age story of a seventeen-year-old boy who, following love, arrives in France where he is welcomed by a Spanish family who fled to Algeria at the end of the Civil War and arrived in France to escape the Algerian War of Independence.
\nThe few months of the summer of 1978 brought me face to face in a flash with 50 years of Mediterranean culture and history, mixing the Italy of the Years of Lead, the Spain of the Civil War and then of Franco’s dictatorship, Algeria, a French colony and then at war for independence.
\nThe encounter with love opened the paths of knowledge to me, made me eat couscous for the first time and made me discover \u201cThe Stranger\u201d by Albert Camus, a book that changed my life and put me face to face with the eternal conflict between natural man and social man.<\/p>\n
Mersault, the protagonist of \u201cThe Stranger\u201d, is a man who refuses to lie and obeys only the laws of nature. He leads a simple life, escapes the obligations of social conventions, is true and sincere to the extreme consequences. He lives his natural, solitary and sensual life, made of skies and summer scents even in prison, when he is arrested for killing a man.
\nHow could I, a young seventeen-year-old, not identify completely with this man? How could I not be passionate about the extraordinary human, intellectual and artistic experience of Albert Camus? <\/p>\n
In this show, the past and the present intertwine and merge: the past of the story we tell and the present of the show we are performing. Because theater is only done in the present and only speaks of today even when it tells stories from many years ago.
\nAnd then during the show we make couscous. It is certainly not an Italian dish, but for me couscous and pasta are the same thing: flavors of the memory of an experience that live in the present.
\nPerhaps, before being born, Stefano delle Ariette spent some time in Algeria. Perhaps, in another life. Because yesterday and today are the same thing, because time does not pass. We are the ones who pass.
