At the shrill sound of the siren, the strange three-wheeled machines advance through the streets of an oppressed city, driven by two sinister figures in dark uniforms: the gruff Captain Beatty and Soldier Montag, repressed by iron discipline but ultimately gentle and cunning. These fire soldiers, followers of the dogmas of their King Toto, believe that the good of the country lies in arresting readers and burning all books. With a mixture of zeal and ignorance, they tear books from the hands of children, condemn them as sources of physical and mental degeneration, and throw them into the smoking oven-cycle of their book-eating machines. But in this city there is a rebel, the mad Don Quixote-Flamingo, tall and dazed, accompanied by his faithful Sancho. With his distorted but lucid vision, he sees chocolate shops in the churches, harmless monsters in old women and thug trees in the squares. Perhaps the madman has read too many children’s books, but his lucidity emerges when it comes to fighting the oppression and ignorance of King Toto and his followers. In this Carnival of Books, satire mixes with reality, inviting us to reflect on the power of books and the need to defend freedom of thought from obscurantism and censorship.
