It was born in 1997 from the second edition of the Community Initiative on rural development, called Leader II and with the third edition, called Leader+, it consolidated its important role of support, in the Ogliastra area, to economic development and the fight against the depopulation of rural areas, through the valorization of local knowledge in the field of agriculture and craftsmanship, the valorization of local culture and the environment.
The GAL guarantees the possibility of effective participation of all interested local partners through the “open door” principle.
Having concluded the implementation of the Local Development Plan relating to the 2007-2013 Programming, financed under Axes III and IV of the Rural Development Plan of the Sardinia Region, the GAL is currently engaged in the 2014/2020 local planning of the Participatory Local Development (CLLD).
The goal of the GAL is to consolidate its role as a promoter of development initiatives throughout the Province of Ogliastra, acting as a Development Agency. To pursue this goal, the GAL has also taken on the role of coordinating the various territorial areas, such as the Unions of Municipalities, in the preparation of important development projects.
In 2010, the GAL was appointed to act as leader of the partnership composed of eleven municipalities on the eastern coast of Sardinia, the provinces of Cagliari, Nuoro and Ogliastra and numerous representatives of the local fishing sector, in participating in the call for proposals of the Sardinia Region for the implementation of Measure 4.1 of the European Fisheries Fund 2007/2013, aimed at the sustainable development of fishing areas, with a project, called “Eastern Sardinia towards 2020”, which won first place in the ranking.
The main mission of the GAL is to promote the sustainable development of the Ogliastra territory, including that part of the territory not included in the Leader areas, through actions and services aimed at supporting the growth of the entrepreneurial and innovation capacity of the territory with actions to promote excellence, operating in a network logic according to the principles of entrepreneurship, innovation, social cohesion, quality of life, work and the environment.
