During the First World War, 287 kg bombs created craters 8 meters wide and deep, killed within a radius of 400 meters and had a range of over 12 km. Hermada and San Michele are two small mountains near Monfalcone and Gorizia, just over 10 km apart as the crow flies. Today, as then, they look at each other and in their own way, perhaps, they manage to talk to each other. San Michele was conquered thanks to the fundamental contribution of the Sassari Brigade, while what was called “the door to Trieste”, namely Hermada, despite the sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of human lives, was never conquered by the Italians.
