Luca Mercalli (Turin, 1966) studied agricultural sciences in Italy and climatology in France, a country to which he owes much of his eclectic scientific and intellectual education. He is president of the Italian Meteorological Society, an association founded in 1865. He founded the magazine «Nimbus», has published many scientific works on climate and glaciers and popular articles in «la Repubblica», «La Stampa», «Donna Moderna» and «Gardenia». Since 2003 he has participated in Che tempo che fa (Rai3) where he introduced his short and incisive comments on the state of the planet and civilization. He also participates in TG Montagne (Rai2) and Ambiente Italia (Rai3). Over the last twenty years he has testified and explained the climate and energy crisis in over a thousand conferences for the general public and seminars for schools and universities. He is a member of the scientific committee of AspoItalia, a section of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas, and of the Climate Broadcast Network of the European Union. He has published several books. Among the most recent: Cows Don’t Eat Cement (Sms 2004), Philosophy of Clouds (Rizzoli 2008), What Time Will It Be (Rizzoli 2009) and Travels in the Time That Fa (Einaudi 2010). He lives and works in Val di Susa, in a small house with a vegetable garden, powered by solar energy. In 2011 he published the book “Prepariamoci” for Chiarelettere
